Economic hardship in Ozalla, Obe, and surrounding communities across Enugu State is not abstract. It arrives as a school fee unpaid, a harvest that falls short, a household that runs out before the month ends.
The Peter and Margaret Nwomeh Foundation believes that a community which takes care of its most vulnerable members is a community that survives — and, over time, a community that thrives.
Our poverty-relief work is organised under the Ezinne Margaret Nwomeh Community Projects (ECP), named in honour of Margaret Nwomeh, whose compassion and quiet service were the Foundation’s moral centre. Through ECP, we deliver direct financial assistance, food support, and enterprise grants to families and individuals who need them most.
In December 2023, we launched the EmpowerHer Microfinance Grant Program — a direct cash-transfer initiative designed to put financial resources in the hands of women in Umunnajinwude, Okoruba-Ozalla.
Women, in our experience, are among the most reliable stewards of household resources and community wellbeing. EmpowerHer does not ask them to prove it. It trusts it.
In 2023, the program provided cash grants of ₦20,000 each to 25 women — a combined disbursement of ₦500,000. Recipients used these funds for entrepreneurial ventures, education costs, and essential household needs. The program continued into 2024 with expanded reach.
In December 2024, we launched Harvest of Hope — a nutrition-support initiative providing food assistance to women and children in Ozalla, Obe, and Awkunanaw during the holiday season. Leveraging local partnerships, the program distributed bags of rice to individual recipients valued at ₦30,000 each, and to village-group recipients in Obinagu (Ozalla), Umuonyia (Ozalla), Amechi (Awkunanaw), and Umuohanee (Ozalla).
Harvest of Hope is not simply a food drive. It is rooted in a conviction that no family in our communities should go hungry during a season of celebration — and that the most direct form of dignity is a full plate.
We intend to expand EmpowerHer to additional villages in Ozalla, and grow the Harvest of Hope program to reach more families in lean seasons. Our aim is a poverty-relief program that meets immediate need with dignity — and builds the conditions for families to need less relief over time.
A donation of ₦25,000 funds a cash grant to a woman in our community. A larger gift supports a young entrepreneur’s first viable season. Harvest of Hope runs entirely on the generosity of donors in Nigeria and abroad. Donations to PNFUSA are tax-deductible for U.S. donors.
