Festus Adedayo remembers Margaret Nwomeh and Senator Ayogu Eze

Writing in his Tribune column, Festus Adedayo wove together two losses he mourned in the same week — that of Mrs. Margaret Nwomeh of Ozalla and that of Senator Ayogu Eze of Enugu North. Recalling visits to the Nwomeh family home, where the late matriarch's first concern was always whether her guests had eaten, he sketched a portrait of warmth and unstinting hospitality. He noted, too, the family she raised, and quoted from Prof. Ben Nwomeh's own tribute to her seventy-seven years of love and sacrifice. "Against All Odds" — Prof. Ben Nwomeh's tribute to his mother

In a tribute published under his own name, Foundation President Prof. Ben Nwomeh traced his mother's life from the upheavals of the civil war through the loss of her husband in 1970, when she was widowed at twenty-three with five young children and no means to provide for them. He recounts how, against daunting odds, she guided all five to the height of their professions — and how she rebuilt her own interrupted education to qualify as a community health officer, serving Nkanu communities for the rest of her career. The tribute names her as the driving force behind the creation of the Peter Nwomeh Foundation, and the reason it now bears both her name and her late husband's. It stands as the fullest account of the conviction — that no sibling, and no child, should be left behind — from which the Foundation grew.

Margaret Nwomeh to be laid to rest in Ozalla

Ahead of the funeral, the press announced that Mrs. Ezinne Margaret Nebechi Nwomeh — mother of Foundation trustee Dan Nwomeh — would be buried at Ozalla in Nkanu West, Enugu State, on Saturday, April 27, following a vigil Mass and wake at the family compound. A lifelong and devout Catholic who held several titles in her parish, she was remembered for the virtue that defined her standing in the community. She had given her working life to public service as a community health worker, nurse and midwife across several communities before retiring. The notice recalled her for her good works, her philanthropy and her steadfast faith, and the media community joined the family in mourning one of its own.

A mother's name, four new scholars: the Foundation marks a turning point

The Foundation conferred scholarships on four new undergraduate students — three of them studying law, physiology and physiotherapy at universities across the South-East — with each scholar to receive N200,000 per session for the remainder of their studies. The selection drew from an unusually strong field, and the committee underscored that the awards were made strictly on merit, noting that all four recipients held cumulative grade point averages above 4.0. At the same ceremony, the President announced that the Board of Trustees had approved renaming the Foundation, and its U.S. affiliate, in honour of the late Mrs. Margaret Nwomeh, who had passed away that February. He also signalled the Foundation's next horizon: marking its tenth anniversary, strengthening its endowment, and widening its work beyond scholarships alone.
