Peter Nwomeh was my mentor from childhood and my baptismal godfather. He did not stop there — he nurtured me during my primary school days, and I served him as a houseboy between 1959 and 1960 before he left for further studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
"The year one was born marks only one's entry into the world; other years, where one proves one's worth, are the ones worth celebrating" (Jarod Kintz).
It happened that in the early seventies, and precisely in 1970, an icon of special brand fell to the ground.
It was in the year of our Lord 1931 that the seed of an oak germinated in the family of the late Chief Ogbuzuru Nwomeh Igwe Nwannaji of Umuohaa Okorouba Ozalla.
I grew up with the late Peter A. Nwomeh in 1949, when the two of us from Umuoha kindred started primary school at St. Paul's RCM, now Central School, Ozalla.
As a child growing up, I held an impression about the man Peter Nwomeh, that he was an academic giant par excellence whom no one could match.
On behalf of my wife, children and the Ibekie family, I am pleased to write a tribute in honour of Mr. Peter Ani Nwomeh, on the inauguration of The Peter Nwomeh Foundation (PNF).
When Ben and I arrived for class at the Science Auditorium on the Akoka Campus on a bright October morning in 1980, I knew there was something special about him.
From what I read about the late Mr. Peter Nwomeh, and the heights his children have attained in their individual professions, there is no doubt that he was a brilliant and intelligent man.
It must have been late 1968 or early 1969. I was too young and small to know dates and times.
Growing up in our beloved home town Ozara, and Four Corners being my second home, one name that stood out with dignity and respect was the name NWOMEH.
I write to congratulate and commend you for the wonderful initiative of setting up the Peter Nwomeh Foundation to promote education and improve the quality of life in Ozalla Nkanu, Enugu State.
